Celebrating 6 Years of Blogging

Today marks the completion of 6 years of writing on this blog, which I started back on January 19, 2009, with a new administration and the New Year.

It has been a terrific journey and I thank all of my readers who have extended their appreciation for my posts.

I continue to believe that there is still much to be said, celebrated, and commented on so I look forward to continuing to write on this blog.

I have tried to provide tips for academic job seekers, for researchers, as well as for students, and to acknowledge achievements of both students and faculty and those who make a difference in people's lives.  I have also tried my best to recognize those who have been great mentors, educators, and leaders.

Research has also been a consistent, very important topic on this blog, RENeW (Research, Education, Networks and the World) as well as travel experiences and observations on academic lifestyles in different countries, Sweden included.

I have tried to include photos in may posts as well as useful links.

And today, as we celebrate Martin Luther King's Day, I recognize the importance of having different voices and perspectives heard and acknowledged.

Looking forward to a great new semester, which begins at UMass tomorrow!

Big Milestone - 5 Years of Blogging and Post Number 1210

When I started this blog, with the first post on January 19, 2009, I never thought that 5 years would pass by so fast and that there would be so much to write about and to comment on!

This is my post #1,210, which comes out to 242 posts a year!

Just for fun, I have included a jpg of my very first post below. I was cautious and not very expressive then -- I have changed.
What continues to amaze me is the comments that I get from my readers, whether through emails or in person, which express appreciation for the advice that I have shared, along with helpful hints, on topics ranging from leadership to advocacy (from Operations Research to Women to the Environment) to handling rejection (of papers, that is) to interviewing skills to even how to organize speaker series and to do research.

I have tried to also cover different events, ranging from conferences to disasters (both local and far afield) as well as travel experiences and education in different parts of the world, and to highlight people who inspire. And, since networks are my passion, I have aimed to share with you fascinating discoveries and applications from supply chains to transportation and even the Future Internet, financial networks, and humanitarian logistics.

What has made the past 5 years so exciting, is the communities that I have enjoyed being part of  and the people that I have met through thousands of miles of travel.

My readers come from almost all continents (except Antarctica -- if anyone from Antarctica is reading this, please email me).  I hope that the information that I have provided has been entertaining and  useful. I have heard from CEOs, other executives,  journalists, government officials,  university administrators, heads of educational institutions, numerous practitioners, scientists, academics, students, alums, neighbors, friends, colleagues, and even artists, authors, and athletes about what I have written that has captured their interest.

I appreciate the many thanks, which makes the effort and thought that goes into writing so worthwhile.

I am grateful to my readers and to  the very special community of fellow bloggers in Operations Research and beyond who always provide encouragement and interesting feedback and discussion!

We certainly live in fascinating times! Let's keep on blogging - we can change the world!

Social Networking through Blogs, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Beyond

The INFORMS Annual Meeting begins soon in Austin, Texas and I am so looking forward to reconnecting with former students and seeing colleagues from around the globe! I am also very much looking forward to giving presentations, listening to the latest research, taking part in several business meetings and award ceremonies, and to simply enjoying the various social and special professional events.

The conference will begin, for me, next Sunday morning when I take part in a panel on Social Networking and Operations Research that was organized by my fellow blogger and very dynamic colleague, Professor Laura McLay of the Virginia Commonwealth University, as part of a cluster of panels organized by the super-blogger and promoter of Operations Research, Professor Mike Trick of Carnegie Mellon University! Joining me on the panel will be Professor Wayne Winston of Indiana University and Professor Aurelie Thiele of Lehigh University.

We will share our experiences with social networking tools from blogs to Facebook and Twitter with Q&A from the audience, led by Professor McLay. I am certain that the discussions will be very interesting and illuminating, so join us, if you can!

Professor Trick has promised to cover the panel discussions on his blog and to tweet about them as well

Hope to see many of you at INFORMS in Texas next week where the weather is much milder than in Amherst, Massachusetts!

The POMS blog

For all of you who are interested in keeping up-to-date on some of the major issues in production and operations management, please read the POMS blog, which is a blog hosted by the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS).

The POMS blog has recently gone live and it is a terrific way in which our students, graduates in Operations Management, faculty in OM and MS, and professionals in this important field can stay on top of very timely topics. My first contribution is on Green buildings, LEED, and energy efficiency.

As some of you may know, POMS is an international professional organization representing the interests of POM professionals from around the world. Its journal, Production and Operations Management, is among Business Week's top 20 business journals.

Special thanks to Dr. Christian Terwiesch, Professor of Operations and Information Management and Senior Fellow of the Leonard Davis Institute for Health Economics at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, for his vision in getting the POMS blog rolling!
